I’m sure that we all remember Mike for different reasons. One of my reasons is that he was the inspiration for me to build a house in Portugal and at the end of this summer I pretty much completed it. In time I will have to rent it out at a full rent but between now and the end of March I would like to offer it to all Mike’s friends at a minimal rate of £280 per week for the whole thing or £140 a week for the little self-contained apartment. I would plan to take £100 to pay for linen, cleaning, gardening, energy etc and to donate the remainder to Mike’s memorial fund. I have spoken to Mike’s family and they support this approach.
The house has 2 double bedrooms and one twin bed on the upper floor with one en suite and one family bathroom; and a self contained one room double on the lower floor. There’s a separate laundry room and, until the end of October, a swimming pool – see photos.
It’s in a little rural place called Poiares, northern Portugal, in the district of Ponte de Lima. PdL is about 25 mins drive away and the coast about 30 mins although the best beaches like Praia d’Ancora are a little further. Another super town nearby is Viana do Castelo. Google the area if you want to know more.

Food and drink are very inexpensive (we struggled to spend more than 15 euros a head for an excellent meal with good wine when we were there in the summer) and it’s not a well established tourist destination unless you’re Roman Catholic and punishing yourself for all your sins by making the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pony rides on little (but very fat) Shetlands are 15 euros for an hour and a half about 30 mins away but there’s serious riding in the area as well.
Flights to Oporto (45 mins drive to Poiares) from Gatwick by TAP and Easyjet or from Stansted to Oporto and Santiago do Compostela (about 2 hrs drive I’m told). There’s also a flight from Gatwick by a Spanish company, Vueling, to Vigo which I’m told is ok – Vigo is probably about an hour and a bit away in Spain.
