Peter Symonds College 5 – 3 University Of Winchester
Peter Symonds men’s hockey team (sponsored by the Old Symondians Society) won a friendly away fixture (5-3) against a University of Winchester squad.
Starting strongly the Symonds players created many openings and were rewarded with an early goal by the tenacious Nick Goldsmith (the first of an excellent double). The University side responded to this goal with a well-worked move, eventually slipping the ball past a despairing Niall Sarkar and slotting it into an empty Symonds net. Not to be outdone Peter Symonds ran through the gears creating a gigabyte of chances which resulted in a succession of goals from Keiron Molloy, Nick Goldsmith and Luke Batchelor taking the score to 4 – 1. Just before the break a lapse in the Symonds defence allowed the University to cut the visitors lead to 4 – 2.The University scored a third goal at the start of the second half which caused the Symonds squad to lose their previous fluidity and during the next 25 minutes neither team could exploit the openings in defence to turn chances into goals. However late in the game a further Keiron Molloy goal, a typical finish from the striker, secured the win for Symonds making the final score 5 – 3. “This was the squad’s first outing of the season,” says Coach Steve Perkins “against very worthy opposition.
